WISH TREE guide
Area rug sizes for real rooms
Use furniture placement, not just floor area, to choose a rug. The rug should define the conversation or sleeping zone and leave a balanced border of floor around it.
Living room
- 5 x 7 ft: a compact option for small seating areas; furniture can sit around the rug.
- 8 x 10 ft: a versatile size for placing the front legs of a sofa and chairs on the rug.
- 9 x 12 ft: a generous size that can hold a full seating group in a larger room.
Bedroom
Place the rug perpendicular to the bed so it extends beyond the sides and foot. For queen and king beds, 8 x 10 ft or 9 x 12 ft often provides the most balanced coverage; always check the room and furniture measurements first.
Dining room
Choose a rug large enough for the table and pulled-out chairs. Leave at least 24 inches beyond the table edge when possible so chair legs stay on the rug while seated.
Before ordering
Use painter's tape to mark the proposed rug footprint. Check door swings, vents, walkways, and clearance under furniture before selecting a size.
